WILJ is pleased to announce our next speaker event on Wednesday, 3 March 2021 from 12:30 to 13:30. We invite Ms. Naomi Koshi, the former mayor of Otsu City who is currently a Partner at Miura & Partners. She will talk about Improving Gender Equality in the Japanese Public and Private Sectors.
Details:
In 2012, Ms. Koshi was elected as the mayor of Otsu City, a prefectural capital with over 340,000 residents, and she served until 2020. She was the youngest female mayor ever elected in Japan, where only 3 % of mayors are female. As Mayor, she fought to expand opportunities for Japanese women, especially through improving the childcare system.
Now as a partner at Miura & Partners, and admitted to the Japan, New York, and California bars, Ms. Koshi focuses on cross-border M&A, including start-up practice, and is involved in smart city projects. Beside practising law, she is launching her own company to improve diversity among Japanese board members and continue her mission to improve gender equality in Japan.
Ms. Koshi was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and was named an OECD Champion Mayor for Inclusive Growth. Ms. Koshi holds multiple degrees from Hokkaido University, an LLM from Harvard Law School and served as Visiting Fellow to Columbia Business School.
For this Webinar, Ms. Koshi will talk about:
• Her change of career from lawyer to mayor, and back to practice law again
• Her achievements as mayor – what did she do to empower women to stay in workforce in her city?
• What were the barriers to serve as a female mayor in Japan?
• What percentage of Japanese company directors are female? What should we do to improve corporate governance and increase corporate value in Japanese companies?
• Her next goal as a lawyer and an entrepreneur

越氏は2012年に大津市長に当選され、2020年まで務められました。大津市は人口約34万人の滋賀県の県庁所在地です。日本の市長の中で女性はわずか3％であり、越氏は最年少の女性市長でした。市長として、女性の機会向上、特に子育て支援の向上に尽くされました。
越氏は日本、ニューヨーク州及びカリフォルニア州の弁護士資格を持ち、現在は三浦法律事務所のパートナーとしてクロスボーダーのM&Aに携わっておられ、スタートアップやスマートシティプロジェクトにも関わっておられます。弁護士業以外にも、自身の会社を立ち上げ、日本企業の取締役会でのダイバーシティ向上など、日本のジェンダー平等性向上のミッションを継続されています。
越氏は世界経済フォーラムのヤング・グローバル・リーダーに選ばれ、OECDの包括的成長のためのチャンピオン・メイヤーに選ばれました。北海道大学及びハーバード・ロースクールで法学修士を修められ、コロンビア大学ビジネススクールの客員研究員を務められました。
